Stórurð is a breathtaking sight in East Iceland that has become increasingly popular among hikers. The area is surrounded by stunning landscapes, with vibrant blue-green ponds contrasting against lush meadows and dramatic tuff Dyrfjöll mountain peaks. As the name suggests, Stórurð is scattered with massive boulders left behind by retreating glaciers. There are five marked trails leading to and from Stórurð, offering a range of options for exploration. It's best to visit from mid-July to early autumn when the snow has melted. The hike takes about 4-5 hours, so it's perfect for a day trip.
