Ásbyrgi is a horse shoe shaped canyon in the North of Iceland. It's vertical cliffs has created a protective environment and at the base of it a lush forest grows. Go for a walk all the way to the base and find a little lake. Or do the bigger hike and get all the way to the top for a grand view over the canyon.

If you're coming here from Dettifoss, a 4x4/4wd is highly recommended. The roads from Dettifoss to Ásbyrgi (Road 862 & 864) are only open in the summer. If you're coming from the North/Husavik, the road is open year round but could be very difficult to drive in the winter. As always, it is very important that you check road conditions and closures at road.is.
