Personally and having tested both, I much prefer to sleep on the island because it is much more practical and in addition you can take breaks at the hotel at will, knowing that you have to walk a lot when visiting Venice. Arriving by car and for this road trip, I compared dozens of car parks because in Italy they can sometimes be horribly overpriced.
