The Track:

The walk is harder than it looks - the track is rather undulating - most definitely not flat. With a toddler being carried, and a 7 year old it took us 5 hours including breaks. We went with inexperienced trampers, and they did struggle on the hike with quite how undulating the track was. As experienced hikers we almost didn't notice.

You are sheltered in the bushline which is nice in hot weather or wind. The track is well maintained and well worn being part of a few trips, it's just the undulation which would make me recommend a different track for first time hikers.

Hut:

 The hut has platform bunks, and is lovely and modern. There are a few spots in the bush where you could pitch a tent. There is a bit of space around for playing in the bushline.

Recommendations:

 I would visit this hut after having done the easier ones in the area - Lakehead/ Coldwater, and I'd almost say Bushline is easier too despite the constant uphill.

It's a great next step, still being a good length, but not too hard. It can be done as a first hike with kids 6+ walking the whole way as long as you know they won't mind the challenge. To be honest younger kids would manage but it might not be a great experience as a first hike. Pop it lower down the list.
