The Track:

Coming in via Paddy's Track is the direct route. You can turn this into a loop by going out via Pinchgut Track - that's the easier way to do the loop.

The track is quite steep, and relentless uphill. It can be very exhausting carrying gear for kids, as well as be quite exposed to wind and hot sun.

But it is short and sweet. The gradient isn't terribly steep, it's more just how relentless it is.

The track is well worn, but the last section is a little rougher. The views as you get higher are absolutely spectacular though.

If you head back via Pinchgut track, you can make a stop at the Relax Shelter which is a good place to have a break and hide from hot sun or cold weather.

Hut:

The hut is modern, open plan, with platform bunks.

Lots of running space outside. Just behind the hut around 5 minutes walk is the old Kea Hut to check out - it's an old ski hut!

Recommendations:

This can be a great hike as long as you're prepared for the relentless uphill. Make sure to take plenty of snacks, breaks, and water. Don't load the kids packs up too heavy - I would stick to 5-10% of their bodyweight maximum.

Try avoid going on a relentlessly hot or windy day due to how exposed the track is.
