Suitable in Winter? Yes, but freezing

Camping Available? Kind of

4wd required? No

Parking / Track:

The hut is just right next to the road on Braemar Road. A gravel road than any 2wd will be fine on.

Hut:

The hut is a lovely old historic hut, however there is no toilet, so you'll have to take your own waste out with you. It used to be along the Te Araroa for a while before it was re-routed. Now it doesn't see much if any overnight use.

2 bunks with mattresses. The hut isn't overly warm in winter, but it would be warmer if you BYO firewood to burn in the open fireplace.

Occasionally it does get a bit messy inside being right on the roadside.

Recommendations:

This can be a great way to experience a super basic hut without needing to hike anywhere. It's also a great way to break up a drive by either staying here or just as a stop to stretch the legs and explore the hut. Make sure you have a poo pot with or similar to carry out waste.
