Parking / Track:
Ideally you'll make it all the way to the hut.
Around 600m before the hut is a pretty big river crossing. If you don't want to risk your car through this, just park before the river to walk the rest of the way. You'll get wet feet doing so, but better than getting your car stuck if you're not confident!
With a 2WD the closest you'd get would be the river crossing before the turn-off to boulder forks. Or from the standard 2WD carparking bay you're looking at around 8km.
This hut is harder to drive to than the nearby Caves Hut, as there is a thinner track with more drop-offs as it cuts around the cliff. There's no way an AWD would make it here, vs there is a chance that you could get to Caves Hut in an AWD.
Hut:
The hut is a standard NZFS S70 6-bunk design.
There is an older hut nextdoor, however this has a dirt floor and wouldn't be that suitable for kids to be sleeping in!
Recommendations:
If you've got a 4WD, this would be a great intro to huts for kids.
