Parking:
Technically you can drive right to the hut - though the track was very muddy when we went, so to avoid risking getting stuck with no cellphone reception we parked just on the main Rainbow Road and walked the rest of the way to the hut.
In winter the road is locked. You will need to pay for a key from Rainbow Station - in summer instead you leave the toll in the toll box for crossing Rainbow Road.
Coming from the south in winter you will probably need snow chains as the road is an alpine road. From the north you may also need chains in winter, but it is less likely.

The Track:
If you do park on the main Rainbow Road, it is about 1.2km walk to the hut along a 4WD track.
Hut:
The hut has individual bunks, but you can pop 2 matresses on the floor if you have the hut to yourselves.
Recommendations:
Great first hike if you have a 4WD and want to walk the 1.2km to the hut. There is a great creek behind the hut and tracks to explore in the bush.
