Parking:

Park near the end of Braemar Mt Cook Station Road near the DOC sign.

The Track:

With only 3km to walk along a 4wd road, this is basically accessible to most.

When we walked it, it only took us around an hour. The walk isn't super exciting, but it's not long enough to get too bored.

Being in such high country, it can get freezing even during the day in wintertime. While safety wise there isn't any avalanche danger or anything, in rough weather conditions, you wouldn't want to be here from a hypothermia point of view.

If you ask permission, you can sometimes 4wd all the way to the hut too.

Hut:

When we visited the hut was very rough, and not somewhere I'd want to stay the night with kids, however a few months later the hut was extensively tidied up and done up. Now with the new roof on too, it looks like a much nicer hut to stay at. There's plenty of space to camp nearby.

Recommendations:

An easy walk for all ages. Just make sure weather conditions are good. The hut isn't super popular, so you should have a bed available most of the time even without bookings. It's also close enough to visit as a day trip with kiddos.
