Parking:
You need to access this hut via water, so you'll need to park at the Manapouri township overnight carpark.
The Track:
While some people do access this hut via kayak, it is far too far for kids to paddle. Instead take a water-taxi - or your own or a hired boat. Steve Gooding Marine in Invercargill hire boats.
Hut:
The hut is a beautiful old solid timber construction. It was restored in 2022 by the Backcountry Trust.
It sits in a great spot just at the mouth of the Freeman Burn River. There used to be a track heading up this river to the Bradshaw Sound, however this was abandoned in the 1950's, and has long since overgrown.
The river mouth is a beautiful place to stay and hang out though with a great beach.
Recommendations:
If you can get access to a boat, or want a water-taxi ride, this is a great hut to come and visit, it is stunning, in a great location, and with plenty of space for kids to play.
