4wd required? Yes in winter, recommended in summer.
Parking:
Park at the Flora Carpark. In winter you will need a 4WD, and sometimes in summer too as the road is quite steep in sections.
The Track:
The track all the way to the hut is along a 4WD track.
You walk a short way up to the Flora Saddle, and then head downhill to Flora Hut.
After about 30 minutes you'll reach Flora Hut. From here, the track keeps heading downhill, though at a slightly gentler gradient winding with the valley. Being a 4wd track, there is plenty of room to hold a child's hand while walking, and the distance is very child-friendly too.
You'll also have the heavier pack going downhill, and on the walk back out the next day your pack will be lighter having eaten through some of your food.
Hut:
There are two very unique huts here, and I would seriously recommend this trip for anyone in the area as these huts are both built into huge rocks and are quite the sight to see.
Upper Gridiron Hut is a small 3 bunk hut with individual bunks and walls built enclosing it.
Lower Gridiron Rock Shelter is more of a shelter and has no walls, you're just sleeping under a rock. Platform bunks, but you need to climb up a ladder to get to them. There is a creek very close by too which is great for playing in.
The sandflies here make me prefer Upper Gridiron, but with only 3 beds it can fill up quite quick. Not enough room for 2 matresses on the floor, but there is a fireplace to keep you toasty!
Recommendations:
This is definitely a bucket list type hut to visit. Worth the walk even just for a day trip, but overnight does make it more special. Upper Gridiron does heat up enough with the little fireplace even for a winter trip.
Most kids aged 3+ will be able to walk the whole way, though bring a carrier just incase any under 5's need a break.
