Parking:
Park at the top carpark near Sullivans Bay. It is along Ngawera Road, just before the lockable gate.
The Track:
You've got two walking options here. Either way, step one is to follow the track down to the Te Muri Estuary. Follow the Cudlip Point Loop Track. Here you need to cross the Te Muri Estuary - this can only be done 2 hours either side of low tide.
Then walk along Te Muri Beach (you can camp here if you'd like to return for another trip).
From here you can either follow the coast around to the hut (This also needs to be done 2 hours either side of low tide, so plan accordingly) or you can join onto the purple track and head up and over the hill down to the cottage on the Puhoi River.
Heading around the coast is much more fun for kids.
Another option is to kayak to the hut. Paddle from Sullivans Bay or Waiwera Beach (Though there are several other options). The kayak options are around 5km, and would need a ver low wind day to do with kids.
It is easiest to paddle the short up river section into the hut with the incoming tide, and leave with an outgoing tide, especially with kids.
Hut:
The hut is basically a bach more than a hut! It has lots of extras - hot showers, a fridge, gas cookers, and all crockery and cutlery etc. This means you don't really need to being anything except your own food, sleeping bags, and clothing.
Beds are 6x single beds.
Recommendations:
This is a great spot for a summer water adventure! Take the coastal route in summertime for what feels like a secret mission! It can be a first hut to visit with relatively easy access and an equipped hut.
