❌ DON’TS
Before your Balkan trip, here’s our friendly “maybe skip that” list.
Balkatinos
Bosnia and Herzegovina
🙅♀️ Don’t assume taxis take cards.
Cash is your best friend here.
🗣️ Don’t expect English everywhere.
A few local phrases go a long way; even a simple “Hvala!” goes a long way.
Use apps like Google Translate or Google Lens to translate any signs or menus.
📅 Don’t plan too rigidly.
Locals run on Balkan Standard Time so you might come across unexpected change of plans. Luckily, here is our guide to help you find other options.
🤳 Don’t film people without asking.
People are warm, not paparazzi-friendly so it's always best to ask if it is okay to take a photo or film them.
🚫 Don’t compare Bosnia-Herzegovina to nearby countries.
Every Balkan nation has its own beauty and people appreciate the distinction. We truly hope you can absorb and appreciate this country's uniqueness.
Also, avoid making comments or asking questions about the recent past events as some wounds are still open and we must be mindful of that.
If you are doing a tour, it'd be best to keep your questions for your guide.
🔇 Don’t stay quiet if you need help or are lost.
Locals are extremely willing to assist, but you’ll need to initiate the communication even if that means using your phone to translate.
💳 Don’t rely on Apple Pay everywhere.
We are still catching up here with some modern changes (in our opinion, sometimes that's a pro and con) so carry backup options.
🚗 Don’t assume car seats are provided.
Bring your own or confirm very clearly with your car rental. Taxis do not have the option of car seats.
🛟 Don’t take rivers lightly.
Rivers here are gorgeous but currents are strong. Respect nature.
🧭 Don’t trust Google Maps blindly.
Most of the time is accurate but some points on the map are outdated. It is best to check reviews if you are following a route or double check with locals, if possible.
🚭 Don’t freak out if you people smoke indoors.
Well, yes... Freak out! It is something that it's still allowed here in some part of the country. We've highlighted the non-smoking ones in Banja Luka.
