What you'll do
Day 1
The Boathouse Palm Beach - big vibes
restaurant
Such a beautiful waterfront cafe!
The Boathouse in Palm Beach is one of those spots that just feels like a little slice of coastal paradise. Right on the water, surrounded by boats and lush greenery — it’s got that breezy, barefoot-luxe vibe that makes you wanna stay all arvo. Whether you’re popping in for brekkie, a cheeky coffee, or a long lunch, it’s one of those places where everything just looks (and tastes) bloody beautiful.
It’s a bit on the spendy side, but honestly? Worth it for the views and the vibe alone. Think timber tables, fresh flowers, and big beach umbrellas — it’s the kind of spot you’ll want to linger. I’ve been a few times and every visit’s been a treat — there’s just something about sipping a coffee with the salty air in your hair and watching the ferries cruise by that makes you feel like you’re on holiday, even if you’re only an hour or so from Sydney.
Pet-friendly too, so you can bring your pup along (as long as they’re chill). Parking can be a bit of a mission on weekends, so best to rock up early or be prepared for a bit of a stroll. And if you’ve got time, definitely take a wander up to the lighthouse at Barrenjoey Headland afterwards — epic views and a proper leg stretch.
Honestly, the Boathouse is a whole vibe — beautiful spot, great food, and perfect for soaking up that cruisy Palm Beach energy.
Merewether Ocean Baths - Local scene at sunset!
Sightseeing
Cut some laps and enjoy the sunset
Merewether Ocean Baths are such a vibe – easily one of Newcastle’s gems! It’s got that perfect mix of being a local hangout and a stunning spot to just chill and take in the views. At sunset, the place comes alive with people catching up, swimming, or just munching on some takeaway by the water. Honestly, the golden hour over the baths is magic.
If you’re more of a morning person, it’s got a totally different feel. I popped down early for a few laps, and it was so peaceful – just locals doing their thing, a bit of a chat here and there, and that crisp ocean air to wake you up. It’s such a nice way to start the day.
Parking’s pretty easy, which is a win (you know how rare that can be). Grab a coffee from one of the nearby cafés afterward, or bring some snacks to enjoy on the benches.
Dixon Park Beach - aka "Dickos", social spot to hang
beach
Beachfront carpark to chill, surf and socialise
Dickos is my favourite carpark to hang out at and cook up a feed, go for a swim/ surf and hang out. It's a pretty popular spot amongst locals and travellers, so there's always something going on - and the people watching is amazing, as its right on the coastal boardwalk.
There are fresh showers and drinking water nearby, and to sleep just drive 5 mins to King Edward Park.
Glenrock - Secret (abandoned) hang gliding sunrise spot
Sightseeing
How does nobody know about this?? Such a local hidden gem
How does nobody know about this?! The Bombala Walking Track is such an underrated gem, and if you’re up for a bit of exploring, you’re in for a treat. Not only is it a gorgeous trail surrounded by nature, but if you know where to look, you’ll stumble across an abandoned hang gliding launch pad! It’s a bit of a local secret and totally worth finding.
Get there for sunrise, and you’ll see why the spot is so special. Watching the first light break over the horizon with nothing but open skies and breathtaking views is pure magic. It’s the kind of moment that makes you stop and just soak in how incredible the world can be.
The track itself is peaceful and not too crowded, so it’s perfect if you’re after a chilled morning or afternoon adventure. Pack a snack or a coffee and make a mini mission out of it— thank me later x
King Edward Park - Where the 'van lifers' hang
park
Popular amongst locals & travellers - overlooking the ocean
King Edward Park is well-known in the area to host the local campers, it's not an official campsite, but people in vans, buses, rooftops, etc camp here regularly and the locals don't seem to mind. As long as you are respectful and pack up early, this spot is a gem for travellers.
The Bogey Hole is a beautiful ocean pool, which you can access via a boardwalk and staircase.
This is such a gem, please be respectful!
