What you'll do
Experience the Margaret River Region Like a Local
This one-week road trip from Perth to the Margaret River region isn't about just seeing the south-west, it's about living it.
Tried and tested over the years (by me) and reviewed by locals living in the area, this isn't your average Perth to Margs road trip!
This beautiful region has an energy about it that people, including myself, seem to gravitate towards; from the hidden beaches, to tranquil campsites, to local-favourite cafes and the hidden gems that most tourists miss.
Think early morning surfs, trips to the local markets, long lunches at wineries, sunset beers overlooking the ocean, and nights under the stars at the best camping spots. From tucked-away swimming holes to cliffside hikes, this itinerary is for those who want to experience the southwest like a true local.
Enjoy!!

THE THING TO DO IN FREO!
Fremantle Markets is an absolute must-do when you’re in the area. It’s got that rustic, old-school charm mixed with all the vibrant energy of a buzzing market. Whether you’re after unique shopping, local food, or just a cool place to hang out, it’s got something for everyone. The food stalls are unreal, with a ton of options, from fresh produce to tasty international bites – seriously, you’ll want to try a bit of everything. Plus, there’s always heaps of little local gems, from handcrafted goods to vintage treasures, so don’t forget to do a little shopping while you’re there!
The markets are open Friday through Sunday, from 9 am to 7 pm, so plan your visit around that – but note, it can get pretty busy, especially on weekends, so get there early if you want to avoid the crowds. There’s plenty of parking around the area, but it can be tricky to find a spot, especially on weekends, so maybe leave the car a bit further out and take a stroll in.
It’s not pet-friendly, so leave the pooch at home, but otherwise, it’s a pretty laid-back spot to explore.

Popular fresh local food market everyone raves about
The Bunbury Farmers Market is an absolute must if you’re in the area – it’s the kind of place locals swear by, and for good reason! Everything here is next-level fresh and high quality, from the fruit and veg to the artisan bread, cheeses, and ready-made meals. It’s one of those spots where you pop in for a quick browse and end up walking out with a full haul of goodies because it’s all so tempting.
The market has a bit of everything – gourmet treats, deli options, and even an epic section for freshly squeezed juices and smoothies. If you’re camping or road-tripping, it’s the perfect place to stock up on snacks or ingredients for a picnic feast.
It does get super busy, especially on weekends, so go early if you can, but even with the crowds, it’s worth it for the vibe.
Busselton Jetty - Longest jetty in the southern hemisphere
Sightseeing
Walk along the jetty and dive in crystal clear waters
THE LONGEST JETTY IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE!
The Busselton Jetty is one of those iconic spots you just have to visit when you’re in the area – and trust me, it’s popular for a reason! It’s $4 to take a stroll along the jetty, and honestly, it’s so worth it. The walk is stunning, with crystal-clear water stretching out on either side. It feels like you’re floating above the ocean, and the views are next level.
If you’re into diving or snorkelling, this place is a dream. The jetty is a hotspot for underwater exploring, and they’ve even added some epic sculptures under the water for divers to check out! It’s also a favourite for squid fishing, though I’ll admit we gave it a crack and came up empty-handed.
After your walk (or swim), you’ve earned a drink, and Shelter Brewing Co., just across the road, is the perfect spot to treat yourself to a bevvy. It’s got such a chill vibe and is a great way to top off your day.
Mano Wraps - Best wraps EVER!
restaurant
Healthy and gluten-free wraps, better with every bite!
Mano Wraps in Busselton is an absolute must if you’re in the area. Honestly, they make the best wraps I’ve ever had – hands down. You know that perfect mix of feeling totally full but also smugly healthy? That’s exactly how you’ll feel after one of these bad boys. I went for the salmon wrap, added avo (because, duh), and wow... game changer. Every bite was pure bliss. Worth every bite.
The vibe here is super chill, and the staff are legends. Whether you’re grabbing something on the go or hanging around for a bit, you’ll feel right at home. It’s the perfect stop if you’re road-tripping or just exploring Busselton.
If you’re all about good food that hits the spot and keeps you feeling great, Mano Wraps is your go-to. And add the avo. You’ll thank me later.
Castle Rock Beach - Tranquil paradise with nearby walks
beach
Secluded beach with stunning views
Castle Rock near Dunsborough is an absolute gem and one of those spots where you could easily spend the whole day just soaking it all in. The beach is stunning, with calm, crystal-clear water perfect for a swim or a lazy float – honestly, it’s like something out of a postcard. If you’re into fishing, the nearby rocks are a great spot to cast a line and see what you can catch.
There’s also the Castle Rock Walk, a gentle 3 km return track that takes you along the coastline to the iconic granite boulder itself. It’s an easy stroll, so you don’t have to be a seasoned hiker to enjoy it. The views along the way are incredible, especially with that turquoise water sparkling next to you. If you’re up for more exploring, the Meelup Reserve Trail starts here and winds all the way to Eagle Bay – perfect for stretching the legs and spotting wildflowers in season.
Bungalow Pizza, Dunsborough - Go on Thursday!
restaurant
Retro restaurant with amazing pizza & wine deals
Bungalow Pizza in Dunsborough is next level. Hands down some of the best pizza I’ve ever had—the truffle oil and mushroom one? Honestly, one of the most delicious things I’ve eaten in ages. The vibes are always lively, with that classic Dunsy mix of locals and travellers just soaking it all in.
If you can, go on a Thursday—there’s usually a pizza night special where you get a pizza and a drink for $25, which is such a steal. Perfect spot to kick back with mates, enjoy some unreal food, and soak up the good energy.
I believe it's pet-friendly!
Camp Grace - Quiet waterfront campsite
campsite
Affordable beachfront campsite
Camp Grace, near Dunsborough, is honestly a bot of a gem—right on the waterfront and so peaceful. I’ll admit, when I first saw it was surrounded by Christian/church camps, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but don’t let that put you off. The vibe here is super welcoming, and we had such a lovely stay. We went for a sunrise walk along the beach, and then did some yoga on the lawn at the front.
The location is a dream. You’re literally steps from the beach, which makes it perfect for morning swims or just sitting by the water with your coffee, soaking up the serenity. The amenities are solid—clean showers, toilets, and a communal kitchen area that’s handy if you’re not keen on cooking everything in your van. And the best part? It’s so affordable—we paid around $20 per night, which is such a steal for a beachfront spot like this.
It’s not the most social campsite, but it’s perfect if you’re chasing a more chilled-out, relaxed vibe. Sadly, I don't believe it's pet-friendly, so you’ll need to leave your furry mate at home for this one.
