Berat Castle is more than just a historic fortress; it’s like stepping into a living neighborhood on top of a hill. My favorite thing about visiting is that, inside the castle walls, you’ll find restaurants, small hotels, and little cobblestone lanes where people still live today. One of my go-to stops there is Temi Albanian Food, a family-run spot serving great traditional dishes right inside the fortress.
The castle itself dates back to the 4th century BC, with additions made by the Byzantines and later fortified by the Ottomans. For centuries it was the stronghold overlooking the Osum River valley, and it still carries that layered history in its stone walls and old churches tucked inside.
At the far end of the castle, there’s a viewpoint that’s the the best in all of Berat: panoramic views over the white Ottoman houses of the old town and the mountains beyond. For me, this spot is the highlight of Berat, and I always recommend taking the time to linger here. Whether you’re here for history, food, or simply the view, Berat Castle is a must-see. (Note: the Castle has a small entrance fee, of around 2 euro).
