A Last-Minute Find That Became a Favorite

When we visited Theth in September 2024, we booked Guesthouse Gjoni somewhat last minute. Most of the more well-known places in Theth were already fully booked, and we weren’t expecting much. But this stay turned out to be one of the best surprises of the trip: a reminder that in Theth, sometimes the more tucked-away guesthouses offer the most peaceful and authentic experiences.

I stayed here with my wife, parents, and in-laws, and we all felt the same: the views were spectacular, the family who runs it was lovely, and everything was handled with care and kindness.

Location & View

Unlike most guesthouses that are concentrated in the center of Theth, Guesthouse Gjoni sits about 1–2 kilometers before reaching the village center. That little bit of distance makes a huge difference: not only is it quieter, but you’re also positioned higher up in the valley, with a view that stretches over the dramatic slopes and peaks of the Albanian Alps.

On our first morning, I woke up early and sat out onto the terrace. The sun was just starting to rise over the mountains, and the air was cold and still. That moment: totally silent, just light and shadow slowly spreading across the valley, is one I’ll never forget. It’s scenes like that that make Theth feel so special.

Rooms & Comfort

The rooms are basic but newly renovated, and we were pleasantly surprised by how clean and comfortable everything was. Nothing fancy, but fresh linens, solid beds, and updated rooms, which, in Theth, is more than enough to feel like a proper retreat after a day of exploring.

At the time, we paid around $40–$50 a night for a double room, which felt like a great deal, especially compared to some of the more expensive and more crowded options in the village. For the price, it really delivered on comfort and quiet.

Food & Hospitality

The family who runs the guesthouse was one of the highlights of the stay. They were incredibly warm and always made us feel at home, without being too formal or too present. Dinners were classic Albanian northern dishes: grilled meats, fresh vegetables, homemade bread, and raki, of course. We ended most nights sitting outside or at the tables, drinking, playing chess, and just enjoying the mountain air. They also have a fireplace in the dining area, which is great if the nights get a bit chilly.

Their dog was also super friendly and sweet: a small detail, but one that added to the feeling that we were truly welcomed into someone’s home.

What’s Nearby

From the guesthouse, I did a morning walk to Gjeçaj Waterfall, which took about 30 minutes. It’s a small but beautiful waterfall right along the main road, and made for a peaceful solo hike before the rest of the group had woken up. If you’re looking to avoid the more trafficked trails during mid-day, this is a quiet, worthwhile walk with zero crowds. However, to get to the main attractions of Theth, I’d suggest driving down to the village center (5 minutes).

Final Thoughts

Guesthouse Gjoni is the kind of place you hope to stumble upon when traveling: simple, personal, and memorable. The view, the food, the peaceful location just outside the center, and the warm welcome from the hosts all added up to one of the best stays I’ve had in northern Albania.

There are a lot of guesthouses in Theth these days, but I’d absolutely stay here again, and I’ve already recommended it to friends heading up that way. If you’re planning a trip to Theth and want something more quiet, affordable, and full of charm, Guesthouse Gjoni is an easy yes.
