Tirana Castle (Kalaja e Tiranës) is a historic site in the heart of the city, with origins dating back to the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. While only parts of the original structure remain, the area has been beautifully renovated into a lively pedestrian street filled with restaurants, wine bars, cafes, and small artisan and souvenir shops.
Today, it’s less about exploring ruins and more about enjoying the atmosphere. The space has become one of Tirana’s most vibrant spots, especially in the evenings, with a mix of locals and visitors coming to eat, drink, and walk around.
If you visit, I’d highly recommend Ceren Ismet Shehu (Kalaja) for traditional Albanian food. Other great options include Tartuf Shop for truffle-focused dishes, Cioccolatitaliani Kalaja for gelato and desserts, and wine bars like Shendeverë and Oping’s.
Overall, it’s a great place to walk through, browse, and stop for a meal or drink, especially if you’re looking for a more curated and lively atmosphere right in the center of Tirana.
