A Legendary Site with a Beautiful View
Rozafa Castle isn’t just a beautiful fortress, it's one of the most iconic places to visit in northern Albania. Perched on a rocky hill just outside Shkoder, the views from the top are reason enough to go: you can see the confluence of three rivers, look out over Shkodra Lake, and on a clear day, even spot the Albanian Alps in the distance. I’ve been here a few times now, and it’s especially magical at sunset, when golden light reflects across the lake and paints the ruins in warm tones.
But the site is more than just a view. Rozafa Castle is steeped in legend: most famously the tale of Rozafa, a woman who was buried alive in the castle walls as a sacrifice so the fortress would stand strong. According to the story, she asked only that part of her body be left uncovered so she could continue to care for her infant child. It's a haunting, symbolic tale of sacrifice, motherhood, and strength: one that adds emotional depth to the experience of walking through the old stone walls.
Getting There
The castle is just a 10-minute drive from the center of Shkoder, and you can reach it easily by car. I’ve also rented a bike and cycled up before, which is totally doable, but fair warning, it’s a climb. The castle sits atop a steep hill, so if you're not in the mood to break a sweat, I'd recommend driving. There’s parking available at the entrance.

Beyond the Castle Walls
Rozafa Castle has also become a modern cultural landmark. Over the past few summers, it’s been home to Za Fest, one of Albania’s most beloved alternative music festivals. I haven’t been to the festival myself yet, but I’ve heard rave reviews from friends, it’s a unique chance to experience live music in a dramatic, historical setting.
Why You Should Visit
If you're heading north or passing through Shkoder, Rozafa Castle is absolutely worth a stop, especially if you're into history, photography, or just want to take in some incredible views. Even if you’ve seen other castles in Albania, Rozafa stands out both for its mythology and its location. I usually recommend people carve out an hour or two here, and if you can time it with sunset, all the better.
