Pfaueninsel: Berlin's Enchanted Island Retreat
Nestled in the River Havel in Berlin-Wannsee, Pfaueninsel—meaning "Peacock Island"—is a 67-hectare sanctuary blending natural beauty with rich history. Accessible only by a short ferry ride, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers visitors a tranquil escape from the city's bustle.
A Royal Legacy
Originally known as "Kaninchenwerder" (Rabbit Island) in the 17th century, the island gained prominence in the late 18th century when King Frederick William II of Prussia transformed it into a romantic retreat. Between 1794 and 1797, he commissioned the construction of a picturesque white palace as a summer residence for himself and his mistress, Wilhelmine Enke. Designed to resemble a medieval ruin, the palace became the centerpiece of the island's idyllic landscape.
Architectural and Natural Wonders
Beyond the palace, the island boasts several notable structures:
Meierei (Dairy Farm): Built to resemble a Gothic monastery ruin, this facility once supplied dairy products to the royal household.
Kavaliershaus: A neogothic building designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, serving as guest accommodations.
Luisentempel: A memorial temple dedicated to Queen Luise of Prussia, reflecting the island's romantic heritage.
The island's landscape, designed by renowned gardener Peter Joseph Lenné, features winding paths, ancient oak trees, and Berlin's oldest rose garden.
A Haven for Wildlife
True to its name, Pfaueninsel is home to free-roaming peacocks, adding to its fairy-tale ambiance. In the early 19th century, the island housed a menagerie with exotic animals like kangaroos and alligators. While the menagerie was relocated to the Berlin Zoo in 1842, the island remains a protected nature reserve, hosting diverse flora and fauna.
