You’ll see him for the first time and remember him forever. Suilven is a dominating force in Assynt, but standing only 731 meters above sea level he only just makes it into the Graham category of mountains. But his unique face, odd shape and perfect positioning make this mountain stand out in a region full to the brim with incredible giants. From the beaches of Achmelvich and Clachtoll, to the long winding road to Lairg, Suilven sits watching your every move as you clamber your way across his domain.

You would be forgiven for assuming this particular mountain is not for climbing, the unforgiving shape just doesn’t look like it’s for us mere humans to even attempt, at least without the use of rope and vice-like fingers. But a long, slow and fairly flat walk from the North brings you right up to the belly of the beast, and all of a sudden he doesn’t seem quite as terrifying.

Suilven is absolutely as unforgiving as he seems, but reaching the craggy top after an hour of rubble filled scrambling, and gazing over the seemingly endless views as the sun drops in the sky, creating shadows on the hills miles long, any thought of tired legs, sweaty backs or midge bitten arms are a thing of the past, and the calm stillness is all that you can see and feel.
