Skara Brae is a remarkably intact 5,000-year-old Neolithic village on Orkney you can explore via raised boardwalks and viewing platforms; it is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and has a small visitor centre, toilets and a car park. There is usually an admission charge and seasonal opening hours, so check times and book in high season. The short walk from the car park is over uneven, sometimes muddy ground, so wear sturdy shoes and warm waterproof layers and expect strong winds. Interiors are visible from protected walkways but are not fully wheelchair accessible, and drones are typically prohibited without permission. Visit early or late to avoid crowds and combine the trip with nearby sites such as the Ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe.
