Midhowe Broch on Rousay is one of the best preserved Iron Age brochs, sitting beside a large chambered cairn and reached by a short walk from a small car park, so plan to get there via the Orkney Ferries timetable and allow time for the local ferry crossing. There are no big visitor facilities on site, so bring water, sensible shoes and a jacket for sudden weather, and expect uneven stones and narrow internal stairways if you go inside. Don’t climb on fragile masonry or stray into fenced areas, take photographs but leave nothing behind, and factor in ferry return times because cancellations or rough weather can make your schedule tight.
