Egypt

Egypt is generally considered a safe destination for travellers, with a welcoming culture and hospitable people. Serious violent crime against tourists is very rare, though petty theft (pickpocketing, bag-snatching) can occur in crowded tourist areas like Cairo, the Pyramids, Luxor markets or busy souks. It’s easily avoided with basic precautions - keep valuables out of sight, use hotel safes, avoid flashing cash or jewellery, and stay alert in busy places. The vast majority of locals are warm, friendly and genuinely helpful, and most visitors feel comfortable exploring cities, sites and markets.

Nature-wise, the main things to watch out for are intense sun exposure, dehydration and heat exhaustion. Egypt’s desert climate brings scorching heat (especially inland in summer), so high-SPF sunscreen, plenty of water, hats and light clothing are essential, particularly at open-air sites like the Pyramids, temples or desert excursions. When swimming or snorkelling in the Red Sea, watch your step - some areas have sea urchins, sharp coral or occasional stonefish. While Egypt is not prone to cyclones, it can experience occasional sandstorms (khamsin) in spring or sudden dust storms, which may briefly affect visibility and travel.
