Moorea, French Polynesia

  • Language - French and Tahitian are the main languages spoken. English is widely understood in hotels, restaurants, and tour operations, but less so in smaller local spots.

  • Currency - the official currency is the CFP Franc (XPF). Cash is useful for smaller businesses, markets, and food trucks.

  • How to Pay - credit cards (Visa & Mastercard) are accepted at most hotels and restaurants, but some local businesses only accept cash.

  • Getting Cash - ATMs are available in Maharepa, Cook’s Bay, and near ferry ports, but they are limited and can occasionally run out of cash. It’s best to withdraw enough before heading to more remote areas.

  • Visas - most travellers do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Passports should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

  • Insurance - travel insurance is not mandatory but highly recommended, especially if you plan to snorkel, dive, hike, or join whale-related activities.

  • Plugs - French-style plugs (Type C & E) are used. Voltage is 220V, so bring a universal adapter if needed.

  • Getting Around - the easiest way to explore Moorea is by rental car or scooter. Taxis are available but limited, and public transport is infrequent.

  • Connectivity - Wi-Fi is available at most accommodations but can be slow. An eSIM or local SIM card is the most reliable option for staying connected.

  • Mosquitoes - mosquitoes are present year-round, especially in the warmer months. Bring insect repellent, particularly for evenings.

  • Ocean & Lagoon Conditions - the lagoon is calm and swimmable year-round, making Moorea ideal for snorkelling, paddleboarding, and kayaking.

  • Drones - they're are allowed, but regulations apply. Avoid flying near people, resorts, and wildlife, and always follow local rules.
