Simple ways to travel Moorea more consciously, respectfully and responsibly

Respect marine life - avoid touching coral, turtles, rays, dolphins, or whales when snorkelling or swimming. Never stand on coral, and always keep a respectful distance from marine animals, especially during whale season.

Choose ethical whale experiences - only book whale-watching or in-water encounters with licensed operators who follow strict distance and time regulations. Never chase whales or enter the water without permission from your guide.

Wear reef-safe sunscreen - Moorea’s lagoon is fragile and home to coral reefs, rays, and tropical fish. UTraditional sunscreens often contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which can damage coral DNA, disrupt marine life reproduction, and contribute to coral bleaching. Besides, the reef-safe ones are also better for your skin and usually biodegradable.

Support local businesses - eat at locally owned restaurants, shop from island artisans, and book tours run by local operators. Your support helps sustain the community and preserves traditional knowledge.

Respect land & cultural sites - many beaches, trails, and viewpoints pass through private land or culturally significant areas. Stick to marked paths, respect signage, and always ask permission before entering or photographing private property.

Reduce plastic waste - bring a reusable water bottle and tote bag. Refill stations are becoming more common, but waste management on islands is limited, so reducing plastic makes a real difference.

Choose eco-conscious stays - look for accommodations that prioritise water conservation, solar energy, reef protection, and local employment.

Tread lightly on nature - don’t remove coral, shells, sand, or stones, and avoid feeding wildlife. What looks like a souvenir plays an important role in the ecosystem.
