The Best Times to Visit Moorea
Moorea has a clear dry season, a warmer rainy period and a dedicated whale season that shapes the best time to visit

Moorea, French Polynesia
Rainy season (Nov to April) - this is Moorea’s warmer, wetter season, with higher humidity and short but intense tropical showers, often in the afternoons. January to March tends to be the wettest period, with occasional cyclones in French Polynesia (rare, but possible). Travel is still doable, landscapes are lush, and crowds are fewer, but weather can be unpredictable.
Dry season - best time to visit (May to Oct) - cooler, drier, and breezy, this is widely considered the best time to visit Moorea. Days are sunny with lower humidity, making it ideal for beach time, hiking, lagoon activities, and overall island exploration. Ocean temperatures sit around 24–26°C, refreshing but still comfortable for swimming.
Shoulder season (April & Nov) - these transition months offer a sweet spot between seasons, with generally good weather, fewer crowds, and better value for accommodation. You may experience occasional rain, but it’s usually brief and followed by sunshine. A great option if you want balance without peak-season prices.
Whale season (July to Oct) - Moorea is one of the best places in the world to encounter humpback whales as they migrate through Polynesian waters to mate and give birth. Sightings are common from the shore, and responsible whale-watching and in-water experiences are available with licensed operators. Peak months are August and September.
Warmest & calmest lagoon conditions (Dec to March) - if warm water is your priority, this is the time to go. Lagoon temperatures reach 27–29°C, perfect for long swims, snorkelling, and paddleboarding. Just be prepared for higher humidity, stronger sun, and the chance of short tropical downpours.
