The Best Times to Visit Zanzibar

Zanzibar has 2 very distinct rainy seasons and 2 very distinct dry seasons

  • Long rainy season (‘Masika’) beginning March to end of May - this is the heaviest and most consistent rainy season. Expect regular downpours, high humidity, and sometimes rougher seas. Many lodges and hotels close for maintenance during this period, and it’s generally considered low season for tourism. Generally not recommended to visit, as the island gets empty and the weather is way too unpredictable to enjoy your holidays.

  • Dry season (best time to visit) June to October - cool, dry, and breezy - ideal for beach days, diving, and wildlife safaris. One thing to keep in mind is that the ocean is at its coolest which is 25-27 degrees Celsius. It’s considered to be the coolest time of the year, perfect if you’re not a huge fan of the heat and tropical humidity.

  • Short rainy season (‘Vuli’) late October to early December - these rains are lighter and more sporadic. You’ll often get short, intense showers followed by sunshine. Travel is still very possible during this time, and the landscape is beautifully lush. If you’re looking for a quieter time on the island with reduced rates for accommodation and activities - it’s a good time to visit. However, occasional short rain or cloudy skies might be present.

  • Dry season (best time to visit) mid-December to February (also, my personal fav) - hot and mostly dry - great for sun-seekers and underwater visibility. The ocean warms up till 28-30 degrees Celsius, making it a perfect place to be spending hours in the ocean without getting cold. However, it’s also considered the hottest time of the year, with the tropical sun feeling particularly intense, so make sure to stay hydrated and wear high SPF.
