General
Sheep Meadow is one of Central Park’s most peaceful and popular lawns, stretching across 15 acres on the park’s west side between 66th and 69th Streets. Once a grazing area for sheep in the 1800s, it’s now a favorite spot for picnics, sunbathing, and lazy afternoons under the skyline. With its wide open field and tree-lined edges, it feels like a quiet escape in the middle of Manhattan.

Access and Layout
You can reach Sheep Meadow from several entrances, the easiest being near 66th Street and Central Park West. The space is open and grassy, surrounded by tall elms and paths that lead to nearby spots like The Dairy, the Carousel, and The Mall. To keep it relaxing, ball games, alcohol, and loud music aren’t allowed.

The Experience
On sunny days, the meadow fills with people lounging on blankets, reading, and watching clouds drift by. It’s a place to slow down, enjoy the skyline peeking over the trees, and take in that rare New York mix of calm and energy.

Tips
Come early on weekends to find a good spot, especially in summer. Bring a blanket, snacks, and sunscreen, but skip the glass bottles. There are restrooms and cafés nearby, and when you’re ready to move on, stroll to Bethesda Terrace or Strawberry Fields to keep exploring.
