If you want to have a very special local dinner experience, head over to Røkenes Gård where you'll be greeted by a family who has owned and operated this farm for 10 generations, dating back to the 1600s.

While at Røkenes Gård, I was lucky enough to chat with the current owner, Kristian-Fredrik, who told us a bit about the history of the property. Røkenes was founded by a Danish sailor who came up to Harstad when he heard about a well-known widow living on the property.

Today, the property still operates as a small family business and has been visited by many notable people from across the world - they even showcased photos of Mikhail Gorbachev and the Norwegian royal family visiting. They use ingredients from their own farm and from local producers, as well as the sea. And often prepare the food using traditional cooking methods, like smoking or curing.

Reservations are required. Visit their website for full details on how to book a table.
