What you’ll do

This Itinerary is specifically designed for the winter season to make the most out of it even if it is snowing and keep you safe on the roads when driving.

Winter time is a tricky time to drive around, that is because it can be very slippery to drive around even though the car rental companies have good winter tires.

So first things first. Before you start driving you need to check the weather conditions for that day. I use the local website that is Landsverk.fo

On this website you will see in real time where it is slippery to drive and also the weather conditions.

We have about 5 hours of daylight in December and January so of course you will not manage to see many places at this time of the year.

Depending on the weather condition you can change the places accordingly. I would recommend you to start with the village of Gásadalur and the waterfall Múlafossur falls. The only thing you need to be careful of is when you go out from the tunnel, drive very slowly because it can be very slippery. The people that work with the company that cleans the roads start early in the morning and normally it is safe enough to drive after 9 - 10am. But I always be extra careful on the road and you should do the same.

Next up, drive to the village of Bøur which is just 10 minutes away from Gásadalur. Park the car in the parking lot and walk around the village and enjoy the beautiful cozy houses. Maybe you should also go down to the beach as well to enjoy the view of the beautiful sea stack Drangarnir and islet Tindhólmur.

After that you can drive to the petrol station called Magn which is at the village Miðvagur before you head to the next location. I’m sure that you will be needing a nice warm cup of tea or coffee.

Now that you are warm again you can drive to the next location which is the famous cliffs Trollkonufingur (Witch’s finger). You need to be careful when driving all the way into the parking lot, because this road is not a main road, therefore it doesn’t get cleaned from the snow. If you can’t drive all the way, you can still park the car farther down and instead of a 10 minute walk, it will take you 30 minutes to get to the view point.

After that you can head over to Streymoy island to the village Kvívik. This is one of my favorite villages to visit at this time of the year. Once you reach the parking lot which is located on the main road to the village of Vestmanna you will see the village Kvívík in the valley and the amazing background view of Koltur island. After that go to the village and park the car close to the church and take a walk alongside the river.

You should finish all these places before it gets dark. Now you can head back to your accommodation and rest for the next day.
