Arguably one of the most unique trail loops in the entire National Park Service system, the Heart of Rocks area is the centerpiece of Chiricahua National Monument — home to surreal balanced rocks, hoodoos, and eroded volcanic formations you won’t see anywhere else. Most hikers complete this as a loop beginning with Echo Canyon → Hailstone → Mushroom Rock → Heart of Rocks → Big Balanced Rock → return via Echo Canyon Trail. The loop is moderate but includes sections of steep stairs and narrow rocky ledges.

➡️ Expect some scrambling in the Heart of Rocks area — short rock steps, uneven stone “staircases,” and narrow passages between hoodoos. Nothing technical, but sturdy footwear is a must.

➡️ Highlights include: Duck on a Rock, Punch & Judy, the Totem Pole, Balanced Rock, the Pinnacle Balanced Rock, and multiple panoramic viewpoints into the rhyolite rock fields.

➡️ Best Season: October–April for cool temps. Summer is extremely hot with limited shade.
