Get ready for one of the most stunning sights in Crete, but know that the reward requires a bit of effort. After a drive on a winding, unpaved road, you'll park and begin the real journey—a 20 to 30-minute hike downhill. The path opens up to a breathtaking panorama of the turquoise lagoon and white sands below. Once you're there, find a spot to relax, swim in the shallow, warm waters, and watch out for the friendly local goats who might just try to sneak a snack from your bag.

How to access

By car + walk (most common):
Drive toward Kissamos and follow signs to Balos. The last part is a rough dirt road (about 8 km) — drive slowly. Park at the top, then walk 20–30 minutes downhill to the lagoon. The return walk is uphill and exposed, so bring water and sun protection.

By boat:
Daily boats depart from Kissamos Port, often combined with a stop at Gramvousa Island. This is the easiest and least physically demanding option, with direct access to the lagoon. There are private boats from the price of 300-400 euros also.

Local tip ⭐
If you go by car, arrive early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and heat. The walk down offers incredible views—stop and enjoy them. Attention: most of the rental car companie do not allow balos so be careful. Bring your own snacks and water. There is a cantina at Balos but the prices are not so low.

Eco note 🌿
Balos is a protected Natura area. Stay on marked paths, do not walk on dunes or vegetation, avoid removing sand or shells, and take all waste with you. The difficulty of access helps preserve its beauty—respect it.
