If you’re willing to tackle a short but steep hike, the Brink of the Lower Falls offers one of the most unforgettable experiences in Yellowstone. Instead of viewing the waterfall from a distance, this trail takes you right to the edge of the 308-foot Lower Falls, where you’ll stand just feet from the rushing Yellowstone River as it plunges into the canyon below. The roar of the water is something you’ll feel as much as you’ll hear.
Trail Details
• Distance: 0.7 miles round trip
• Elevation Gain: About 600 feet
• Trail Type: Out-and-back
• Average Time: 45 minutes to 1 hour
• Difficulty: Moderate
The hike down is easy, but don’t let that fool you. The return trip is a steady climb back up the switchbacks and can be surprisingly challenging. Take your time and enjoy the views along the way.
Tips:
• The hike back up is much harder than the hike down, so pace yourself.
• Wear sturdy shoes with good traction.
• Bring water, especially during the summer months.
• Restrooms are available near the parking area.
• Stay behind the railings and keep children close, as the overlook sits right beside the powerful waterfall.
Family Friendly: Yes, if your family is comfortable with a steep uphill climb. We completed this hike with our kids, and while the hike back up definitely gets your heart pumping, the view at the bottom is one of the coolest experiences in Yellowstone and well worth the effort.
