How to Spot a Tourist Trap in Porto
A few signs locals usually avoid
Foodietravellersguide
Porto, Portugal
Not every busy restaurant in Porto is a tourist trap, but there are a few signs worth noticing.
Be cautious of places that:
Have huge photo menus outside
Have staff aggressively trying to pull people in
Serve every type of cuisine imaginable
Are empty despite being in a busy area
Many genuinely great Porto restaurants are:
Smaller
Simpler
Focused on a few dishes
Fast-moving and noisy
A good sign is usually locals eating there during normal lunch hours.
In traditional spots, service can feel direct or rushed compared to tourist restaurants – that’s often normal rather than rude.
Tip: some of Porto’s best food comes from tiny tascas and snack bars that look almost too simple to be famous.
