Paparoa Point Rest Area is located near the coastline, with picnic tables to pull over and rest on your drive to or from Kaikōura. It's key breeding area for fur seals with lots of them lazing in the rocky shoreline at the oceans edge. At any time of the year, you can enjoy watching the seals play in the water. Of course, make sure you stay at a safe distance from them so as not to disturb them.
