Farewell Spit is a 34 km long sandspit located in the Nelson Tasman region of New Zealand, it is one of the longest natural spits in the world. It is an important wetland, and is a bird sanctuary that provides a home for over 90 species including bar tailed godwits, knots, curlews, whimbrels and turnstones. The first lighthouse was built here in 1869 and still stands today.
