The Waipapa Point Lighthouse has a rich and exciting history. Built in 1883, this lighthouse located in Waipapa Point, Southland, New Zealand was first lit on January 1, 1884. It was built in response to the tragic wreck of the passenger steamer SS Tararua on reefs off of Waipapa Point in April 1881 that resulted in 131 lives lost. In 1975, it was automated and then solar powered in 1988 with a new LED beacon installed on the balcony. With some restoration work done in 2008, it is now sure to dazzle visitors for many decades to come.
