Secret Coastal Hike: Vereda da Rocha do Baixo (São Jorge)

The Vereda da Rocha do Baixo is one of Madeira’s true hidden gems — a steep, wild trail leading from the cliffs above São Jorge down to a secluded coastal platform (fajã) and a rocky beach framed by towering volcanic walls. Hardly any tourists know this hike, yet it offers some of the most dramatic north-coast scenery on the island.

The path zigzags through abandoned terraces and eucalyptus patches, revealing views of the ocean’s raw power as waves smash against the black rock below. At the bottom, time seems to stand still — crumbling fishing huts, volcanic pools, and the constant roar of the Atlantic.

This hike feels untouched and adventurous: no cafés, no railings, just raw Madeira.

• Best season: Spring and autumn (cooler temps, lush vegetation).

• Bring plenty of water — no facilities at bottom.

• Shoes with grip essential — loose rock and exposed sections.
