A super cool and unique geological wonder tucked away in the California Desert. Picture this: over 500 towering spires made of calcium carbonate rising dramatically from a dry lake bed — some reaching heights of 140 feet! These formations come in all shapes and sizes, from short and squat to tall and skinny. They've even made appearances in commercials, music videos, and iconic movies like Planet of the Apes and Star Trek V.

Getting There:

The Trona Pinnacles are located about 20 miles east of Ridgecrest, California. To reach them, you'll need to drive down RM143, a gravel/dirt road off of Highway 178. While the road is mostly manageable in a regular car, a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle is recommended, especially after rain. There are signs marking the turnoff, and it's about a 5-mile drive from the highway to the pinnacles themselves.

Pet-Friendliness:

Yes — pets are allowed! The wide-open space and surreal landscape make it a great spot to let your pup explore, just make sure to keep them leashed and pack plenty of water. There’s no shade or natural water sources, so bring extra for your furry friend, especially in warmer months.

Camping:

Want to stay overnight? Dispersed camping is allowed, and it’s completely free! There are no designated campsites, but you can set up camp pretty much anywhere around the formations. It’s a popular spot for stargazing thanks to the minimal light pollution. Keep in mind: there are no facilities, no restrooms, and no water, so come prepared. Pack it in, pack it out, and leave no trace!
