Welcome to Fira, the vibrant heart of Santorini! Perched dramatically on the edge of the caldera cliffs, this is where you'll find those iconic whitewashed buildings and blue-domed churches clinging to the rockface. Lose yourself in the maze of narrow, winding streets, where you'll discover fantastic shops, buzzing cafes, and restaurants with unforgettable views of the volcano. The energy here is contagious, making it the perfect place to soak up the island's lively atmosphere, especially as the sun sets over the Aegean.
This is the best town to base yourself if you plan to rely on public transport. From Thira main town centre you can take public buses to almost anywhere even Airport and it's honestly so cheap. 1 way ticket cost 2.2 Euro as of Summer 2026 and i think it's a bargain. Buses are not like public buses but a private coach where you can even take your big luggage and suitcases.
So coming to Fire :D Town itself is very pretty and Here are few things which i would not want to miss.
if you into hiking like me then Greece's best hike starts from Fira : Fira to OIA hike. Honestly this hike is so rewarding with the views i have never seen before. It's so otherwordly that you will not believe your eyes. Path is well marked so it's impossible to get lost . Hike difficulty is easy to moderate with not so steep sections throughout. Hike is around 8 kms one way and can take anywhere between 3-5 hours depends on your photo breaks.
Do checkout the three bells of Fira church especially in golden hours.
Take the Fira cable car down to the old port for volcano views or if you are feeling brave, walk down but mind donkeys .
Volcano + hot springs boat tours. Even if you do not plan to swim do this boat tour. Experience itself is very good.
