🏔️ Day 10 : Shirakawa-Go

As evening fell on Day 9, we left the city lights of Kanazawa behind and headed into the mountains.

We took the highway bus (a smooth and scenic ride) from Kanazawa Station directly to the UNESCO World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go.

This was the only day of our entire trip where it rained, but it only added to the magic. As we climbed higher into the mountains, the rain turned into a blanket of thick, white snow, covering the village in a silent, winter wonderland.

Our Base: We stayed at Guest House Yamashita-Ya. Staying in a traditional guesthouse in this region is a "gem" experience—it feels like being welcomed into a family home while the snow falls outside.

🏘️ The Village of the "Prayer Hands"

Shirakawa-go is famous for its traditional farmhouses with steep, thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall. They are called Gassho-zukuri, which means "constructed like hands in prayer."

Seeing these ancient houses covered in deep snow under a misty, rainy sky felt like stepping into a traditional Japanese ink painting.

This village is the definition of "slow travel." There are no neon lights or busy malls—just the sound of the wind and the sight of smoke rising from wooden chimneys.

⚠️ A Word of Advice on Pacing:

We loved the serenity here, but a warning for future travelers: If you want to slow down your pace or are feeling travel fatigue, skip this stop. It requires extra travel time to get into the mountains. However, if you want a complete change of scenery from the modern cities, it is unforgettable.

💡 Traveler’s Note:

Even with the rain and snow, our spirits weren't dampened. In fact, the weather made the village feel even more tucked away from the rest of the world. Just make sure you have waterproof shoes and a good camera—the contrast of the dark wood houses against the white snow is breathtaking.
