Deciding whether to drive the Cabot Trail clockwise or counter-clockwise is a classic debate among visitors, and truthfully, there isn’t a "wrong" way—only a different perspective. The 298 km (185 mile) loop offers a completely different experience depending on which shoulder of the road you’re hugging.

The "Outside" Lane: Counter-Clockwise

Driving counter-clockwise (starting toward Baddeck and moving north through Ingonish) puts your vehicle on the ocean side of the highway.

  • The Dramatic Views: This is the most popular choice because you are physically closer to the cliffs.

  • The "Drop" Factor: For many, the descent into Pleasant Bay or down the North Mountain is more thrilling when there is nothing between your car and the Atlantic but a guardrail.

  • Easy Access: Most scenic look-offs are located on the right-hand side of the road in this direction, making it effortless to pull over for a photo without crossing oncoming traffic.

The "Inside" Lane: Clockwise

Driving clockwise (heading toward Margaree and up the west coast first) keeps your vehicle on the mountain side of the road.

  • Comfort for Nervous Drivers: If heights make you uneasy, the clockwise route feels "safer" because you have a lane of traffic between you and the cliff edge.

  • The Grand Reveal: Many argue that the views of the Cheticamp coastline and the sweeping climbs of the Highlands are more visually rewarding when approached from this direction.

  • Better Lighting: For photographers, driving clockwise in the afternoon often provides better light for capturing the famous red-rock cliffs of the west coast.

💡 Pro Tip for Ridge On The Chimney Guests

Since your cabin is located on the west side of the island, you are perfectly positioned for either. A popular local secret is to drive the counter-clockwise route so that your final stretch of the day is the sunset drive down the west coast toward Chimney Corner.
