Zanzibar, Tanzania, United Republic of

Zanzibar is generally considered a safe destination for travellers, with a laid-back island atmosphere and a friendly local community. Violent crime is very rare, and while petty theft can occasionally occur in touristy areas, it’s easily avoided with basic precautions - such as keeping valuables out of sight and being mindful in crowded places. The locals are warm and welcoming, and most visitors feel at ease exploring the island on foot or by bike.

Nature-wise, the main things to watch out for are sun exposure, dehydration, and minor marine hazards. The tropical sun can be intense, so high-SPF sunscreen, plenty of water, and sun protection are key, especially if you're spending time on the beach or out at sea. If snorkelling or swimming, watch where you step - some areas have sea urchins, coral, or stonefish. While Zanzibar is not in a major cyclone zone, it does experience seasonal rains, mostly from March to May, which can occasionally disrupt travel plans.
