If you only visit one island in Helsinki, make it Suomenlinna. This old sea fortress is not just a historical site – it’s a little village on its own, with locals living there year-round, cozy cafés, art galleries, and endless seaside spots for picnics and walks. I can't remember how many times I've been on this lovely little island!
Built in the 1700s when Finland was under Swedish rule, Suomenlinna has seen a lot – from battles to peaceful summer days. Today, it’s one of Helsinki’s most popular sights, but if you wander off the main paths, you can still find quiet corners where it feels like you have the place to yourself.
How to get there:
The public ferry (Suomenlinnan Lautta) leaves from Helsinki’s Market Square and takes about 15–20 minutes. They leave very often, like every 20 minutes during the day, but in the evening and night less often.
You can use your normal city transport ticket (zones AB), so it’s easy and cheap.
Ferries run year-round, and going in winter is surprisingly magical when the sea is frozen.
There’s also a private water bus in summer, which takes you to different parts of the island.

Ferry can get crowded in the summer: If you're visiting at peak summer months, the last ferry's of the evening can be very crowded, so arrive early so that you will secure a spot on the ferry or you have to wait for the next one.
Go beyond the crowds: Most visitors stick to the main routes – take time to wander to the King’s Gate area or the quiet southern side of the island for amazing sea views and fewer people.
Picnic like a local: There are some perfect picnic spots by the shore. You can bring snacks or pick something up from the small supermarket on the island.
Visit outside peak hours: Early morning and evenings are the best times if you want to enjoy the island’s peaceful side.
Stay for sunset: The golden light over the sea is stunning, and it’s a great time to see the locals out for evening walks.
Museums & cafés: Suomenlinna has several small museums if you’re into history, but it’s also totally fine to just enjoy the nature and the old fortress walls without going inside anywhere.
