Te Kopikopiko o te Waka is a stunning cultural viewpoint overlooking Fox Glacier on the West Coast. It’s one of the most accessible places to experience the glacier and surrounding peaks without needing to hike.

The lookout features a beautifully designed viewing platform shaped by Ngāi Tahu storytellers, representing the waka (canoe) of Māui and the ancient Māori legend of how the Southern Alps were formed. On a clear day, you’ll get panoramic views across the Fox Glacier valley, Aoraki/Mount Cook, and the Southern Alps.

It’s an ideal sunrise or sunset spot, with soft light falling across the glacier and mountains — and when conditions are calm, you’ll often see low-lying mist drifting through the valley.

Photography tip: Bring a telephoto lens to capture compressed views of the glacier. A tripod is handy in golden-hour or low light. There’s ample space around the platform to set up your shot without interruption.
