The Best Times to Go to the Lunigiana

Food, flowers, and funghi, the seasons of the Lunigiana

Northern Tuscany: La Lunigiana, Italy

Let's start off with the shoulder seasons. My favorite time to be in the Lunigiana is autumn, when you'll find wild game, foraged asparagus, porcini mushrooms, and black truffles in abundance. The temperatures are moderate, and it rains less than in winter. If you're staying late in fall, make sure your lodging has heat available. If not, the heat will be off until early in November. I take my favorite pictures in fall. Great light and clouds prevail.

Spring is the time for my favorite food festivals called "sagre". Here are the spring foods like fava beans with pecorino and pancetta you eat at communal tables with folks who've come from all over Italy.

Like fall, the weather is moderate.

Summer is the time to head for the beaches, but there are many festivals to enjoy in the towns and villages. Look for open castles during this time.

Winter is cold and often rainy. There is occasional snow. January can bring some very fine, crystal-clear skies.
