Tucked along the rugged coast of The Catlins, Cathedral Cave is one of the South Island’s most dramatic hidden gems. Only accessible at low tide, this massive sea cave cuts deep through sandstone cliffs, creating an awe-inspiring natural tunnel that feels both remote and powerful.

The cave is enormous, much larger and darker than its Coromandel namesake, with towering walls that echo with the sound of crashing waves. When the tide is right, you can walk right through the cave and emerge on the other side, framed by wild ocean and untouched coastline.

Getting there involves a short walk through native forest, often alive with birdsong, before the landscape opens up to a raw, windswept beach. The remoteness of the Catlins means you’ll often have the place nearly to yourself, adding to its wild, off-the-beaten-track feel.

Timing is everything here. The cave is only safely accessible around low tide, and conditions can change quickly (Check their website before going). If you get it right, it’s one of the most unforgettable coastal experiences in New Zealand.
