A major Buddhist temple located in Nagano, founded in the 7th century. It houses a statue considered to be the oldest Buddhist representation to have arrived in Japan. The main building (hondō), classified as a national treasure, is known for its underground passage symbolizing the journey to enlightenment. An important pilgrimage site, open to all Buddhist schools.
