Huaraz is the gateway to the stunning Cordillera Blanca mountains and one of Peru’s top spots for trekking, adventure, and high-altitude scenery. Nestled in the Ancash region, this lively town sits at around 3,000 m above sea level and serves as the perfect base for exploring glacial lakes, towering peaks, and traditional Andean villages.

From Huaraz, you can easily access iconic hikes and treks such as Laguna 69, the Santa Cruz trek, and day trips to Pastoruri Glacier. Even if you’re not trekking, the town itself has markets, cafés, and artisan shops, offering a glimpse into local culture and Andean life.

The scenery is unforgettable — snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes, and rugged valleys surround the town, making every walk, drive, or short hike feel like a postcard. Wildlife like Andean condors, llamas, and alpacas are often spotted along the trails, and there are plenty of photo opportunities at every turn.

Practical tips:

  • Altitude: Huaraz sits at 3,000 m, so take it easy your first day to acclimatize.

  • Tours & Costs: Day trips typically cost USD $30–$60 per person, while multi-day treks range from USD $150–$500 depending on length and guide service.

  • Best time to visit: May–September for dry season trekking; November–March can be rainy but fewer crowds.

  • What to pack: Layers for cold mornings/evenings, sturdy hiking boots, sunscreen, and water bottles.
